BGLOs and the Super Bowl: A Shared Love for Game Day Traditions
“MOM, THE PIZZA ROLLS!” might be the phrase of the season after a frozen pizza brand announces its first-ever Super Bowl ad. While this is a significant moment for the food industry, it also highlights the cultural power of the Super Bowl as more than just a football game—it’s a communal event that brings people together, especially for members of Black Greek Lettered Organizations and HBCU alumni.
The Super Bowl: A Cultural Touchpoint
For decades, the Super Bowl has transcended sports, becoming a moment that celebrates food, friends, and cultural milestones. For members of Black Greek Lettered Organizations like the Denbigh Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the big game is often part of larger traditions: watch parties hosted by fraternity brothers or sorority sisters, lively debates over halftime performances, raising funds for scholarships and, of course, a table full of snacks to fuel the fun. As a member of Delta Sigma Theta's National Board many moons ago, I remember taking a break from the business to watch the Super Bowl with my sorors.
For me, these gatherings mirror the values of community and camaraderie that are central to the Black Greek experience. Whether cheering for a favorite team or simply enjoying the atmosphere, game day is another opportunity to strengthen bonds and create lasting memories.
But, no Super Bowl gathering is complete without a solid snack lineup. Game-day spreads become a centerpiece for laughs, debates, and shared moments, much like the meals at chapter meetings or campus events. While brands aim to grab attention during the big game, it’s the memories created around the table that truly matter. The Super Bowl reminds us that the simplest of meals—whether store-bought or homemade—can spark connection, making every bite a piece of the tradition.
For HBCU graduates and members of Black Greek Lettered Organizations, the Super Bowl’s cultural significance extends beyond the game. It’s a platform for brands, performers, and communities to showcase their stories to millions. Iconic halftime shows and commercials often highlight themes of unity, resilience, and joy, aligning with the values that drive our organizations. Seeing familiar stories or shared experiences reflected on this stage adds another layer of pride, reminding us of the importance of representation in spaces that influence culture.
As the Super Bowl approaches, consider how these moments can deepen bonds with your chapter members, family, and friends. Whether you’re hosting a party, joining a watch event, or just tuning in solo, it’s about more than the food or the football—it’s about celebrating the connections that make these experiences meaningful.
